Since 2010, Mason girl’s track has won a regional crown and 6 league titles in the CAAC Red, a division so loaded that it produced other regional winners and the team state champions three of those years (St. Johns once and Waverly twice). Williamston girl’s track has won so many league championships in the CAAC White they may have stopped counting. So when league reshuffling moved Williamston to join Mason in the red this year, something had to give.
Or did it? Mason girls edged Williamston 73.5-63.5 in the early season dual meet to get a leg up on the rest of the league, and Mason ran the table to finish 5-0, though needing to win the last event of the meet, the 1600 relay, against St. Johns to do so. Williamston has been on fire since the early loss, finishing 4-1 on the strength of its sprinters and field events. Both teams finished second in their regionals last Friday night, sending multiple qualifiers to the state meet.
Williamston was the comfortable choice to win the league meet, predicted to score over 150 points, while Mason’s girls, better at dual meets, were predicted just make it into the triple digits.
The meet turned out the way we thought it would, with Williamston scoring 154.5 points, Mason second with 107.5, and St. Johns third at 94, which made Mason and Williamston co-champs.
Jessica Robach of Williamston won the 100 and 200, while Macie Ries of Mason won the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles, and Taryn Chapko of St. Johns won the 800 and 1600. Lucy Petee of Mason won the 400 and took second in the 800.
Senior Hailee Ginter won shot and placed second in disc, while Katelyn Franks PR'd in both shot and disc to take 3rd and 5th, respectively.
To round out the field events, Anna VandenBussche took 5th in high jump and Charlese Dumond tied for fourth in pole vault.
In the running events, Ashyln Pifer placed 6th in the 100. Lauren Sinnavae took second in the mile and closed hard in the 800 to take fourth. Freshman Allison Doneth came back from an exciting Regional meet to take second in the 3200.
The relay team of Ries, Julia Harns, Jadynn Brown, Pifer placed 4th in the 4x100 while Ries, Brown, Petee, and Cailey Mills were third in the 4x400. The 4x800 relay team of Petee, Doneth, Sinnavae, and Alex Erbe took second to give the team 8 points.
